But, finding the perfect winter cabin can be difficult, especially for those wanting to be within walking distance of Snow Summit or Bear Mountain. Properties are limited and often get reserved far in advance.

Even so, after too many mornings sitting in traffic en route to Big Bear from LA as a “quick” day trip, I’ve conceded that renting a slopeside cabin is the way to go. Bear Moutain and Snow Summit each have pros and cons, and the best one will vary depending on your preferences. Bear Mountain is favored by intermediate and advanced snowboarders and freestyle skiers (with SoCal’s only halfpipes), though it does offer beginner slopes and lessons.

In contrast, beginner skiers usually prefer Snow Summit for its wide, connected runs, bunny slopes, and varied terrain. Snow Summit has a reputation for being more family-friendly, though it still offers runs that seasoned skiers and boarders will enjoy. Both resorts are part of Big Bear Mountain Resort, and just a couple of miles apart, so it’s easy to hop between them.

With a mountain shuttle stop right on its corner, Bear Family Cottage is about four minutes from both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. While not exactly slopeside, this modern farmhouse cottage takes special care to be family-friendly, offering a Pack n Play with a mattress, a high chair, portable blackout curtains, and a yard for kids to play in the snow. So we included it in our list.

Activities include foosball, corn hole, ring toss, board games, and marshmallow roasting over a wood-burning fire (roasting sticks included!). The master bedroom has a king bed with an ensuite, and bedroom two features two singles with a futon. All in all a wonderful home for the fam – including your pup!
