Denver to Grand Canyon Road Trip Map

Wondering how far the Grand Canyon is from Denver? Following the most direct route, Denver is about 680 miles (1094 km) from the Grand Canyon and takes about 12 hours of drive time. For the quickest journey, take the I-70 West to Grand Junction and then merge onto the US-191 South at Thompson Springs. Follow the 191 South until it meets up with the US-160 West in Red Mesa, then turn left onto the US-89 South just past Tuba City towards the Grand Canyon.

Still, there’s so much to see between Denver and the Grand Canyon it would be a pity to pass by all the other destinations within reach. We suggest dividing your trip into a multi-week adventure.

How To Use This Road Trip Guide

This Denver to Grand Canyon itinerary is intended to serve as a guide that can be customized to suit your schedule, budget, and priorities. We recommend a minimum of three weeks to complete the route in full. However, we know not everyone has three weeks to spare, so we have also included less elaborate one and two-week options.

If you have less than a week available for your Denver to Grand Canyon road trip, it's best to fly into Flagstaff and rent a car. On the flip side, if you have more than three weeks available, add a night wherever you please or combine this itinerary with an epic Utah National Park Road Trip.

Best Time For Denver to Grand Canyon

The best time for a Denver to Grand Canyon road trip tends to be during the shoulder seasons of late Spring and early Fall. In Spring, the weather is mild, and the wildflowers are in bloom, making for picturesque landscapes along the way. In the Fall, the crowds thin out, and the temperatures are cooler, making for comfortable hiking and sightseeing.

Summer is a popular time to visit, but it can be hot and crowded, with temperatures in the Grand Canyon often exceeding 100°F. Alternatively, winter can bring snow and road closures, so it's not the best time for a road trip unless you're prepared for icy conditions (if you are, keep reading!)

Denver To Grand Canyon In Winter

If you're prepared, a winter Denver to Grand Canyon road trip is magical. Snow in the high desert is something everyone should witness at least once in their life, and you'll feel as though you have some of the country's most popular national parks to yourself.

However, certain roads, trails, and attractions close during winter, and you'll need to adapt your itinerary accordingly. Notably, Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park closes for the winter season (it may be better to swap RMNP for Breckenridge), as does the entire North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Certain lodging options also shut down during the colder months, so it's important to do your research and book in advance.

It goes without saying that a winter road trip from Denver to the Grand Canyon should not be attempted without proper snow tires and/or chains, particularly if passing through the Rockies. Below is our preferred Denver to Grand Canyon winter road trip itinerary.

The city has so many unique sights and attractions catering to all ages and interests. Here are four all-time favorite things to do in Denver:

• Visit Union Station: This historic train station has been beautifully restored and features shops, restaurants, bars, and a hotel. It's a great place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
• Explore Larimer Square: This charming street is filled with historic buildings, restaurants, and boutiques, making it the perfect spot to stroll around and people-watch.
• Check out the Denver Art Museum: This world-class museum features a wide variety of art from around the world, including Native American and contemporary art.
• Visit the 16th Street Mall: This pedestrian-only street is lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. It's a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

If you're looking for a hotel in Downtown Denver, our personal favorite is Le Meridien, which has an awesome rooftop bar and is steps from the Denver Art Museum. However, Magnolia Hotel and The Curtis Denver are two fabulous boutique options.

If you're after a hotel in LoDo (Denver's entertainment district), you can't go wrong with The Crawford (located at Union Station), and for those on a budget, Hostel Fish offers a fun vibe with both shared and private rooms.

Wanting to self-cater? Try this modern 1-bedroom apartment condo near 16th Street Mall or this historic 2-bedroom loft steps from Union Station.

Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

Rocky Mountain National Park is a Colorado national treasure. People come from around the world to take in the gorgeous scenery, explore miles of trails, and enjoy the majestic Rockies. The park is home to stunning mountain landscapes, with peaks reaching over 14,000 feet high and pristine alpine lakes, dense forests, and diverse wildlife.

Things to Do in the Colorado Rockies

Be sure to pack your hiking boots if you're planning a visit to RMNP. The hikes through these mountains are breathtaking and rewarding for all skill levels. Near the park's East Entrance, Bear Lake (0.6 miles) is one of the most popular trails and is suitable for all ages. The renowned Emerald Lakes Trail (3.6 miles) leaves from the same trailhead. For more of a challenge, hike to Sky Pond (9.5 miles). Rocky Mountain's West Entrance also offers great hikes for families.

Many families enjoy picnics, spotting wildlife, and driving along Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the US. Trail Ridge Road connects the mountain town of Estes Park in the east up and over the Continental Divide to Grand Lake in the west. It's only open during summer and is a must-do when passable.

RMNP Insider Tip

Like many parks in the United States, Rocky Mountain National Park now requires a reservation to visit between late May and October. The popular Bear Lake Corridor is a separate reservation but one of the most visited areas of the park. You'll want to see it.

Colorado Rockies Lodging

Unless you plan to camp, you'll need to find lodging in the surrounding mountain towns of Estes Park to the east or Grand Lake to the west. If traveling from Denver to the Grand Canyon in the summer, we recommend stopping in Estes Park for lunch and then pushing on to Grand Lake in the afternoon via Trail Ridge Road.

In Grand Lake, Western Riviera Lakeside and Gateway Inn are the two most popular accommodation options. If you'd prefer a cabin, check out this top-rated 2-bedroom mountain view home or this secluded 3-bedroom log cabin set on seven private acres.

Alternatively, camping is available by reservation in Aspenglen, Glacier Basin, Longs Peak, and Timber Creek (west side). The popular Moraine Park campground is currently closed for restoration but is expected to re-open by summer 2025.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO

If you’re planning a Denver to Grand Canyon road trip, you can't miss Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It’s easily one of the most underrated national parks in the country and features gorgeous panoramas of 1,000-foot canyon walls with the Gunnison River running through the center.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison Highlights

Try to spend at least two days in the park. This way, you can check out the best things to do in the area, like taking a scenic drive along the South Rim before stopping at Devil’s Lookout, Chasm View, and Painted Wall View viewpoints. You can even stop by Gunnison Point next to the Visitor Center and get to one of the best viewpoints in the area via a quick downhill walk.

On day two, check out the much less crowded North Rim, where you can take the East Portal Road to the bottom of the canyon.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison Insider Tip

Try to visit in late Spring or early Fall. This way, you can avoid the intense heat of the summer while using all of the park’s top amenities, as everything will be open for the year.

Where to Stay Near Black Canyon

Unwind for the evening in nearby Montrose at The Old School Lodge. It's a hotel with historic charm built in 1914 and looks out over one of the most picturesque byways in the state. Alternatively, this beautiful yurt is two miles from the park entrance.

For a more rustic experience, head to South Rim Campground. It's about a mile from the Visitor's Center and has 88 campsites to choose from.

Moab, UT

It also has great camping, rock climbing, and mountain biking. Whether you want to kayak or paddle board on the Colorado River or go backcountry camping in the nearby La Sal Mountains, this desert town has something for everyone.

Things to Do in Moab

The best thing to do in Arches and Canyonlands is hike. Arches is one of Utah's most famous national parks, with many famous hikes, such as Delicate Arch, Double-O-Arch Trail, and Devil’s Garden Primitive Loop Trail.

Canyonlands is a more remote national park divided into several sections and offers a great alternative to Arches if you want to get away from the crowds. You can hike Shafer Canyon Overlook, Grand View Point Trail, or Green River Overlook - which are some of the most popular trails. 

If you have navigation skills and experience backcountry camping, consider visiting the Maze, a remote part of Canyonlands that can be accessed by 4X4 vehicle. It's a great place to see some of the best landscapes in Utah.

For the best experience, avoid Moab in Summer. It’s very busy, and hotels, rentals, and tours are expensive. It’s also the hottest time in Moab, and temperatures often climb to triple digits.

The crown jewel of a Denver to Grand Canyon road trip, the Grand Canyon South Rim is one of the world's most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Visitors can experience the canyon's majesty through various activities, including hiking, scenic drives, and guided tours.

Things to Do on the South Rim

One of the best things to do at the Grand Canyon South Rim is to hike a portion of the Bright Angel Trail. The trail descends directly into the canyon and is the start of the iconic rim-to-rim hike. Depending on how far you go, it ranges from 1.5 miles to 12 miles each way. Start early, apply sunscreen, and take plenty of water; hiking out of the canyon during the day can be brutal.

If the Bright Angel hike is too intense for you, opt for the Rim Trail, which meanders along the top of the South Rim and is 12.8 miles in full. Most choose to hike just a portion of it, and large sections of the trail are wheelchair accessible.

If you want to rest your legs, hop on the Hermit's Rest shuttle. There are various Grand Canyon viewpoints along this route. Maricopa Point, Hopi Point, and Pima Point are three of the best stops.

Of course, you can't visit the Grand Canyon without taking in a sunrise or sunset. Mohave Point is a popular spot to do this. Round off your visit by heading to Desert View Watchtower to learn about the area's history and see more canyon views.

When visiting the Grand Canyon's South Rim, make sure to get to the park early to avoid the crowds, especially if you want a good spot for sunrise or sunset.

Where to Stay on the South Rim

Famous for slot canyons and the iconic American landmark, Horseshoe Bend, Page is a desert oasis for road trippers driving from Denver to the Grand Canyon. Located in northern Arizona at the base of Lake Powell, Page is a great place to make a pit stop and explore the area.

Things to Do Near Page

There are plenty of things to do if you spend time in Page. Reachable by a 1.5-mile roundtrip hike, Horseshoe Bend is the famous canyon curve along the Colorado River that you’ve seen in countless photos on Instagram. It's worth spending some time here enjoying the view before continuing on to the second can't-miss destination – Antelope Canyon.

Pencil-thin canyons, shaped by millions of years of wind and rain erosion, gleam in breathtaking hues of orange. Antelope Canyon is divided into six distinct sections, yet most visitors prefer the two most beautiful: Upper and Lower Canyon. Being on Navajo Nation land, you must be on an Antelope Canyon day trip tour to enter the canyon.

After an exciting day of hiking, spend your afternoon splashing around on Lake Powell. You can also enjoy fishing, kayaking, or boating to hidden slot canyons like Labyrinth Canyon. You can even camp alongside the banks. Don't forget to drive to Glen Canyon Dam or Waheap Overlook for magnificent lake views!

Grand Canyon North Rim

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon offers a quieter and less crowded alternative to the popular South Rim, with plenty of hiking, camping, and wildlife spotting opportunities. Located at a higher elevation, it's also cooler and more forested. 90% of visitors never step foot on the North Rim, missing out on an experience unique to what the South Rim offers.

Things to Do on the North Rim

While most people try to see the Grand Canyon in one day, this national park rewards slowing down and staying a few days on each side of the canyon. Spending time on the North Rim offers scenic drives and hikes without the overwhelming kitsch of the tourism industry on the south side. Instead, you can have a much calmer rustic experience.

If you want a day hike with canyon views, take Cape Final Trail (4.2 miles out and back) or Uncle Jim Trail (2.1-mile loop). Those who prefer to spend less time on their feet can enjoy short walks to viewpoints via Bright Angel Point Trail (0.5 miles) and Roosevelt Point Trail (0.5).

Alternatively, drive the Cape Royal Scenic Road, a 23-mile route that starts at the North Rim Visitor Center and leads to several viewpoints, including Cape Royal, Angels Window, and Point Imperial. Cape Royal is the most popular stop and offers panoramic views of the Colorado River winding its way through the canyon.

North Rim Insider Tip

The North Rim closes for the season between mid-October and mid-May due to snowfall and winter conditions. Visitors can still access some park areas by ski or snowshoe, including North Rim Campground, which is open for winter camping (though all services are closed). Check the NPS website for the most up-to-date information.

North Rim Lodging Options

Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge is the only formal lodging on the North Rim and offers cabins and motel rooms with stunning canyon views. There are also a few additional lodging options outside of the park, such as Jacob Lake Inn and Kaibab Lodge, which offer a more rustic experience. As far as camping goes, North Rim Campground is the only option inside the national park.

Durango, CO

2 nights, 6.5-hour drive from Grand Canyon North Rim to Durango

Durango is located in the southwestern region of Colorado and is best known for its charming downtown district and the famous steam train that runs to Silverton. However, the town's proximity to Mesa Verde National Park, just a short drive away, is what truly sets it apart.

The park is home to some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the United States, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the daily lives of the Ancestral Puebloan people who lived in these communities hundreds of years ago. The ancient cliff dwellings were built in large alcoves, where the Puebloans farmed on top of the mesa and climbed down precarious foot and handholds carved into the sheer cliff face to reach their homes.

Things to Do in Durango

In Durango, don’t miss taking the round-trip train to Silverton. A classic narrow gauge steam train heads up into the San Juan Mountains for a scenic ride along the Animas River. Explore Silverton, a historic mining town, before heading back to Durango.

Visiting the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde is a highlight of any trip to Durango. Although some dwellings require climbing up and down ladders, the experience is well worth the effort. The park offers guided tours to several fascinating dwellings open to visitors during the summer season (including the incredible Cliff Palace).

There are also plenty of activities available for those with a sense of adventure, including river tubing, white water rafting, and zip lining.

Durango Insider Tip

When visiting Mesa Verde, remember that some smaller houses have limited access. Book as far in advance as possible to ensure you get a space.

It's also important to note that it takes approximately an hour to drive from Mesa Verde's Visitor Center at the mesa base to the top, where the cliff dwellings are located. To avoid missing your tour, make sure you allocate enough time for the drive and plan accordingly.

Things to Do in Pagosa Springs

Great Sand Dunes National Park may be one of the most incredible and unique National Parks in the United States. The park covers over 230 square miles and is home to the tallest dunes in all of America. If you have time to spare, it's a must-stop on your way back to Denver.

Things to Do at Great Sand Dunes

Before arriving at Great Sand Dunes National Park, stop at one of the nearby rental shops to pick up a sandboard. It is important that you plan beforehand as there is nowhere to rent one in the park.

With your sandboard in tow, you are now ready to spend a day exploring (and sliding down) these massive dunes. Take the first few hours to explore the dunes and perfect your sand-duning skills.

Once you need a break, cool off in the nearby (seasonal) Medona Creek. If you still have energy left, head to Zapata Falls for a quick mile hike to a secluded 25-foot waterfall.

Great Sand Dunes Insider Tip

One of the best parts about Great Sand Dunes National Park is that it is dog-friendly! You and your pup can spend hours exploring and running around the dunes. But it's important to note that the sand can get extremely hot in Summer. Be sure to plan and pack booties to protect your pup's feet and plenty of water!

Although there's no lodging inside Great Sand Dunes National Park, you can camp at Piñon Flats Campground (just one mile away) or backpack inside the park (but a permit is needed). The United States is one of the best hiking destinations in the world, claiming iconic trails such as Half Dome, Mt Whitney, the Grand Canyon, and the PCT (to name just a few!). Given the sheer popularity of many bucket list hikes in the USA, the National Park Service has made permits a requirement for certain trails to reduce crowding and protect natural resources.

Navigating these permit systems is not for the faint of heart, and we’ve combed the internet to simplify the process. Here is our complete USA hiking bucket list, with useful dates and tips for securing permits. Grab your camping must-haves and hit the trail!

2023 USA hiking bucket list

1. Mt Whitney Trail

Famous for its distinction as the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney is located in California and stands at a colossal 14,505 feet tall. An absolutely beautiful yet grueling 22.5-mile out-and-back trail with a 6,656-foot elevation gain, the Mt Whitney Trail is well maintained. It does not require any technical experience so long as it is not covered in snow and ice (often the case until early July). Be sure to check weather conditions and arrive prepared.

Do you need a permit to hike mt whitney?

A Wilderness Permit is required year-round for all day hiking and overnight backpacking taking place in the Mt Whitney Zone. However, between the 2nd of November and the 30th of April each year, no quota is enforced, and hikers can collect their permits directly from the visitor center. Be forewarned that Eastern Sierra winters are treacherous and should not be attempted unless highly experienced. Alternatively, between the 1st of May and the 1st of November, quotas are strictly enforced, and hikers and backpackers are strongly encouraged to apply for permits via the annual lottery.

When is the Mt Whitney Lottery in 2023?

The online lottery is open for permit applications between the 1st of February and the 1st of March 2023. Successful applicants will be notified on the 15th of March and have until the 21st of April to confirm their reservation and pay the required fee. Any unconfirmed reservations will be released online at 7:00 AM PST on the 22nd of April and tend to disappear quickly. Following the 22nd of April, your best bet is to check online regularly for cancellations.

Mt Whitney Permit Types

During quota season, 100 permits are issued per day for Mt Whitney Zone day hikers, and an additional 60 permits are issued per day for Mt Whitney Zone overnight backpackers. Overnight permits can extend more than one night.

Mt Whitney permits during quota season are competitive. Only 34% of group leaders were awarded the date of their choice in 2019.

2. Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim Hike

Among one of the seven natural wonders of the world, completing the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike is a top bucket list item for hiking and backpacking enthusiasts spanning the globe. An incredible 21.6-mile point-to-point trail with a 5,298-foot change in elevation, the linking North Kaibab and Bright Angel Trails are well maintained and broken up by three campgrounds that are equipped with water faucets, compost toilets, and emergency phones (Cottonwood, Bright Angel, and Indian Garden campgrounds). If planning to complete the trail over multiple days (as most hikers do), a backcountry permit is required.

Best Time to Do Grand Canyon Rim to Rim

Backcountry permits are required year-round for camping that takes place below the rim. However, the North Rim is closed to all vehicles between December 1st and May 15th, so keep in mind that a rim-to-rim trip may need to be extended into an out-and-back rim-to-rim-to-rim adventure during this period. For those planning to tackle the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim hike in just a day, permits are not required. Just beware that during summer, temperatures at the bottom of the canyon typically exceed 100 ºF (38 ºC) and can prove lethal to those forced to hike in the heat of the day.

2023 Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim Permit Dates

For the best chance of obtaining a Grand Canyon Backcountry Permit, all requests should be received by fax, mail, or walk-in no later than 5 PM MST on the 1st of the month, four months prior to the proposed start date. For instance, if hoping to secure a start date falling in May, applications should be submitted no later than January 1st (visit the NPS website for a full breakdown of when to apply). Permit applications require up to three weeks for processing. Should any spots remain following the earliest consideration period, requests will be accepted as late as two weeks before a start date, and a limited number of walk-up permits may be available the day before your hike.

What are the Grand Canyon Lottery Odds?

Grand Canyon backcountry permits are fairly competitive during high season - which runs from April to early June and September to October due to favorable weather conditions. Roughly 45% of applicants were successful in 2019. Alternatively, during the low season - which runs from July to August (due to extreme heat) and December to February (due to snowfall), nearly all applicants were successful in securing permits.

3. John Muir Trail

The 200+ mile John Muir Trail (JMT) weaves its way through California's Sierra Nevada and includes iconic destinations such as Yosemite, Sequoia, and Mount Whitney. Most of the JMT falls within High Sierra backcountry and wilderness areas, following the same footpath as the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) for almost 160 miles. Named after the famous naturalist, there are far more hikers interested in this trail than the area can handle.

The full JMT can take 10 to 30 days depending on your pace. Hikers can start at the Northern Terminus heading Southbound (starting in Yosemite and ending at Mt Whitney) or the Southern Terminus heading Northbound (starting at Mt Whitney and ending in Yosemite). The permit system differs depending on which direction and trailhead you choose. Regardless of your starting point, completing the JMT is on virtually every backpacker's bucket list, and it's an experience that will stay with you forever.

When to Hike the John Muir Trail

For most backpackers, the best time to hike the John Muir Trail falls between July and September due to snowfall during other parts of the year. June and October may also be mostly snow-free, but it all depends on the snowfall in California during a given year (which varies widely). While a permit is required year-round to hike the JMT, permits for late fall, winter, and early spring dates are less competitive but fall in mountaineering season and should not be attempted unless extensive winter backcountry experience has been acquired. Many of the typical re-supply points are also closed during winter, creating an added logistical challenge.

When to Apply for JMT Permits

Application dates for JMT permits vary depending on whether you're planning to start at the Northern Terminus (also known as SOBO - or Southbound) or the Southern Terminus (also known as NOBO - or Northbound).

For those hoping to depart from the Northern Terminus in Yosemite (the more popular option), a Yosemite Wilderness Permit is necessary. You can apply via the lottery system up to 24 weeks in advance of your start date. Use this table to help determine your necessary application date. In 2022, some permits were also set aside for release on a first-come, first-served basis seven days in advance of your start date. It's unclear whether this will remain the case in 2023.

For those planning to depart from the Southern Terminus near Mt Whitney (via Whitney Portal or Horseshoe Meadows), you'll either be applying for a Mt Whitney permit (if starting from Whitney Portal) or an Inyo National Forest Wilderness Permit (if starting from Horseshoe Meadows). You can apply for the Mt Whitney lottery between February 1st and March 1st in 2023 and the Inyo National Forest lottery up to six months in advance of your intended start date. Some Inyo National Forest permits are also available online on a first-come, first-served basis two weeks before your start date.

What are the JMT Lottery Odds?

Whether you plan to start your hike from a Northern or Southern Terminus, JMT lottery applications are extremely competitive. Approximately 97% of applicants are unsuccessful. Your odds increase if you're flexible on your start date and/or if you apply via both the NOBO and SOBO permit systems in the hopes that one of the two is successful.

2023 JMT Permit Cost

For SOBO backpackers departing from Yosemite on a Yosemite Wilderness Permit, successful applicants are required to pay a $10 lottery fee and an additional $5 per person if successful. Reservations must be confirmed within the same week you receive your successful outcome notification by no later than Thursday at 11:59 p.m.

For NOBO backpackers departing from Horseshoe Meadows on an Inyo National Forest Wilderness Permit, permits require a $5 fee per person and a $6 transaction fee. For NOBO backpackers departing from Whitney Portal on a Mt Whitney Permit, you'll pay a $6 transaction fee and a $15 recreation fee per person.

How to Get John Muir Trail Permits in 2023

To apply for SOBO permits departing from Yosemite, visit the Yosemite National Park Wilderness Permits page. For NOBO permits departing from Whitney Portal, visit the Mt Whitney permit page. To apply for NOBO permits departing from Horseshoe Meadows, visit the Inyo National Forest Wilderness Permit page.

For SOBO hikers, tack a few days in Yosemite National Park onto the beginning of your trip, and decompress in Mammoth Lakes or Sequoia at the end. For NOBO hikers, do the opposite! Mammoth Lakes is a great place to acclimate in preparation for your start date.

4. Havasu Falls Hike

Located in the Grand Canyon (but outside the national park), Havasu Falls (or Havasupai Falls) lie within the Havasupai Reservation and are managed directly by the Havasupai Tribe. Renowned for their magnificent turquoise color, the falls require a 10-mile hike into the canyon (20 miles out and back) that comes with a 2,155-foot change in elevation. While a Havasu Falls permit is not required to complete the trek, a lodge or campsite reservation is, and they are extremely difficult to secure. Day hikes are not permitted, so all visitors should plan for a multi-day adventure.

Will Havasu Falls Open in 2023?

Yes! The Havasupai Tribal Council has confirmed that they will welcome visitors back to their lands in 2023 for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

When Do Havasu Falls Permits Go On Sale?

Reservations will open on February 1, 2023, for existing permit holders. No new permits will be issued in 2023, and the only way to secure a new reservation is to purchase one from the official transfer list.

Campground reservation dates have not yet been announced for 2024 but typically open annually on February 1st. In 2020, online reservations opened at 8 am on February 1st, and all availability was fully booked within hours. It is strongly recommended that you create an online account before bookings open for any chance of securing a spot.

Havasupai Lodge reservation dates have also not been released for 2024. Typically, lodge reservations open in June the year prior to an intended stay. For instance, for planned 2020 stays, lodge reservations opened at 8 am on June 1st, 2019. Although rates are extremely steep, securing a booking is no easy feat, and reservations are exceptionally competitive.

How Much Does It Cost to Visit Havasu Falls?

There is no budget way to visit Havasu Falls, and rates seem to increase year-on-year. Also, keep in mind that with effect from 2019, camping reservations must be made for four days and three nights, so hikers must be prepared to pay for a 3-night stay. In 2019, rates were $100 per person per weekday night and $125 per person per weekend night. So in 2019, a camping reservation cost between $300 and $375 per person. Rates have not yet been released for 2023 or 2024.

Havasupai Lodge reservations also require a 4-day / 3-night stay. In 2020, rates were $175 per room per night, with each room allowing for a maximum of four occupants. So, a lodge reservation cost $525 per room hosting 1 to 4 people. However, 2023/2024 rates have not been confirmed. An additional entrance fee of $90 per person is charged on arrival.

How to Make a Havasu Falls Reservation

All Havasupai reservations must be made online after creating an online account. In the past, all Havasupai Lodge reservations were made telephonically, but this is no longer the case. Any lodge-related queries may be directed to info@havasupaireservations.com.

Can You Helicopter to Havasu Falls?

It is possible to reach Havasupai Lodge without hiking via helicopter. However, if you have a camping reservation, you will still need to hike the two miles from the lodge to Havasupai Campground. Helicopters only operate during certain parts of the year and fly on certain days, so planning is required. However, it is not possible to book the actual helicopter journey in advance, and all flights are handled on a first-come-first-served basis. Flights are operated by Airwest Helicopters and depart near the trailhead. A one-way flight currently costs $85 per person.

It is also possible to ride a horse to the falls or book a pack mule to carry your gear (i.e., backpack) if you're looking to lighten your load. However, there is much debate around the ethics of using horses and mules in the Grand Canyon due to reports of sub-standard treatment. Do your own research and proceed with caution.

Grand Canyon National Park is a necessary addition to any Havasu Falls adventure, following which we recommend a few days of rest and rejuvenation in Sedona.

5. Pacific crest trail (PCT)

Stretching 2,650 miles from the Mexican border to Canada and passing through 25 national forests and seven national parks, the PCT soared in popularity following the release of Cheryl Strayed's blockbuster book-turned-film Wild. Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail takes roughly five months (for the moderately fit hiker), and many opt to complete just a section of the trail due to time constraints. If hiking more than 500 miles of the trail in a single trip, a PCT Long Distance Permit is required. For hikes less than 500 miles, permits must be obtained via each local agency you will be hiking through.

When is the Best Time to Hike the PCT?

Permits are required year-round if planning to hike more than 500 continuous miles of the PCT. Unless you're a backcountry skier or have significant winter backcountry experience, it is strongly recommended that you confine your hike to the warmer, snow-free months - which generally fall between July and early October. Still, if completing the full PCT and starting from the Mexican border, it's also important to start your hike before the desert becomes scorching hot. For northbound hikers aiming to backpack the full 2,650-mile trail, it's generally best to start your journey in mid-April or early May to only reach the Sierra Nevada mountains (miles 700 - 1150) in July.

How Many PCT Permits Are Issued Each Year?

In 2023, Northbound permits for PCT trips starting south of Sonora Pass will be issued at 50 permits per day for start dates falling between March 1st and May 31st. Southbound permits starting at or near the Canadian border will be issued at 15 per day for start dates falling between June 15th and July 31st. 1,400 permits will also be issued for section hikers overlapping the John Muir Trail, and 600 permits will be issued for those starting in the Southern Sierra.

While it may be tempting to apply for an available PCT permit falling outside these dates, doing so may prove dangerous for the average hiker. Both summer heat in the desert and snow season in the Sierras can quickly turn lethal.

The USDA Forest Service and Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) announced that the 2023 permit season would open on November 15th, 2022, for all hikes starting near the Mexican border. All other itineraries will open on January 10th, 2023.

How Much Do PCT Permits Cost?

PCT permits are free of charge. However, a full thru-hike of the PCT typically costs hikers between $4,000 and $8,000 in supplies, food, stopovers, etc.

When Do PCT Permits Open in 2023?

Northbound hikers starting south of Sonora Pass can apply for permits on November 15th, 2022, at 10:30 am PST, when 35 permits per day will become available. If you've missed this date, you can apply on January 10th, 2023, at 10:30 am PST, when the remaining 15 permits per day will be issued. For Southbound PCT thru and section hikers, permit applications will open on January 10th, 2023, at 10:30 am PST.

You can apply for your PCT permit here. The permit application system makes use of an online queue. When you arrive any time before 10:30am, you will be assigned a random place in line. Arriving early does not improve your odds, but those arriving late (after 10:30am) will be placed at the back of the queue.

6. Appalachian Trail

Crossing through 14 states and extending 2,193 miles between Georgia and Maine, the Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only trail in the world. For thru-hikers planning to tackle the trail from start to finish, doing so typically takes five to seven months, and only one in four successfully completes the endeavor. Still, for those starting to grow weary of the phrase "permits are highly competitive," the Appalachian Trail is a fantastic option, as a permit is not required. However, some campsites along the route charge a fee, and certain national and state parks require a permit upon entry.

When Is The Best Time to Hike the Appalachian Trail?

Most thru-hikers opt to complete the Appalachian Trail from south to north, starting in Georgia. For northbound hikers, the best time to start is between early March and mid-April, intending to finish the trail before mid-October. For southbound hikers starting in Maine, the best time to start falls between early June and mid-July, with the aim of completing the trail by September or October.

Do You Need a Permit to Hike the Appalachian Trail?

No permits are required for thru-hikers aiming to complete the Appalachian Trail. However, certain national and state parks along the route require permits or camping fees. How Much Does It Cost to Hike the Appalachian Trail?

A full thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail typically costs hikers between $3,000 and $6,000 (excluding gear) over the course of their 5 to 7-month trek.

After conquering the highest elevation point along the Appalachian Trail (Clingmans Dome), spend a few nights off trail in Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, TN, two outdoor towns known as gateways to the Great Smoky Mountains.

7. Half Dome Trail

Looming 4,737 feet above the Yosemite Valley floor, Half Dome is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. A stunning yet taxing 14 to 16-mile out-and-back trail with a 4,800-foot elevation gain, most hikers opt to approach Half Dome via the Mist Trail (with the alternate option being the John Muir Trail). During cable season, permits are required to proceed beyond the dome's base. The approach to the summit is not for the faint of heart, and it is not uncommon to hear of hikers falling to their death. Between 2005 and 2015, 12 deaths and 140 search-and-rescue operations were reported. Still, for those who persist, the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular.

2023 Half Dome Permit Dates and Quotas

When the cables are up, a permit is required to hike beyond the base of Half Dome. Typically, cables go up towards the end of May (usually the Monday before Memorial Day) and are taken down in mid-October, subject to weather conditions. During the rest of the year, permits are not required, but scaling Half Dome without cables is only for those with extensive rock climbing experience and should not be attempted by the average hiker.

225 permits are available daily for those intending to use the cables during cable season.

How Can I Get a Half Dome Permit in 2023?

The Half Dome cable pre-season lottery falls between March 1st and 31st. Applicants can apply for the lottery at any point during this period (i.e., there's no advantage to applying earlier versus later), and results will be released by mid-April. Successful applicants have until May 8th, 2023, to confirm and pay for their permits. Each application can include up to six people.

For those that miss the pre-season lottery, a daily lottery is also available between May 24th and October 8th (weather conditions permitting). Applicants can apply for a permit via the daily lottery two days before their desired date, anytime between midnight and 4 pm PST. Applicants will be notified if they were successful later the same day. Multiple applications by the same person are not allowed, but each can include up to six people.

How Hard Is It To Get Half Dome Permits?

In 2020, 28% of pre-season lottery applicants successfully secured permits, and 23% of daily lottery applicants were successful. However, in typical (non-pandemic) years, only about 7% of daily lottery applicants are successful.

How Much Do Half Dome Permits Cost?

Each lottery application requires a $10 non-refundable fee. For successful applicants, a $10 recreation fee is also charged for each hiker. For the pre-season lottery, the $10 recreation fee is due on or before May 8th. For the daily lottery, the $10 recreation fee is automatically deducted using the credit card provided at the time of application.

8. The Wave

Located in Coyotes Buttes North (a section of Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness), The Wave lies on the Utah-Arizona border. It is one of the most photographed natural features in the United States. It's exceptionally difficult to visit, given the limited number of permits issued per day.

Still, getting a permit is only part of the adventure. The Wave lies in a backcountry wilderness area with no developed trails or facilities en route. Permit holders will be given a route description and photo map with GPS coordinates. Basic navigation skills are recommended, particularly if you're contending with the extreme heat of summer. The journey is 6.4 miles round-trip and is rated as moderately difficult.

Do You Need a Permit for The Wave?

Permits are required year-round for The Wave. All issued permits are day-use only, and no overnight camping is allowed. Regarding the best time to visit The Wave, summers can be scorching hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100 ºF (38 ºC). Alternatively, during winter, the weather can be unpredictable. Still, permits are so competitive that hikers are generally happy to visit any time of year regardless of conditions.

How Does The Wave Lottery Work?

A maximum of 64 people per day are permitted to visit Coyote Buttes North (the area that includes The Wave), and permits are extremely competitive. 48 permits and/or 12 groups (whichever comes first) are available daily via a seasonal online lottery. An additional 16 permits and/or four groups (whichever comes first) are available via a new mobile-based day-of lottery. Each application can include a maximum of six people.

To apply via the online lottery, applicants can submit their application at any point during the calendar month falling four months before their intended hike date. For instance, those hoping to visit in May should apply via the online lottery any time during January (there's no advantage to applying earlier in the month versus later). Results are released on the first day of the following month (so in the example above, results would be released on February 1st), at which point payment is due.

To use the new mobile-based lottery (which recently replaced the walk-in lottery that used to take place in Kanab), apply through the recreation.gov app two days before your intended hike date between 6 am and 6 pm Utah time.

To apply, you MUST be within the set geofence, which includes areas such as Page, Vermilion Cliffs, Kanab, Orderville, Glendale, and East Zion (see here for full geofenced region). You will not be able to apply via this method if you are not physically located in one of these areas. Successful applicants will be notified by 7:15 pm Utah time and must collect their permit at 8 am the following day.

The Wave Permit Costs

There's a $9 non-refundable fee associated with each application. For successful applicants, a $7 fee per person (or dog) is also payable. All fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable.

How Hard Is It To Get a Permit for The Wave?

In 2019, only 3.5% of applicants were successful in securing permits.

Spring and Fall are The best times to glamp in Joshua Tree (or visit generally). Summers are brutally hot, and winters are chilly, though most of the glamping options included in this guide remain open year-round and are well-equipped with both A/C and heating. Is Yosemite Pet-Friendly?

Dogs are permitted inside Yosemite National Park but are quite limited in where they can go. Leashed pets are allowed on paved roads, sidewalks, and bicycle paths and can access the Wawona Meadow Loop. Dogs are not permitted on any other hikes (even on a leash), including Vernal Fall. Are Cabins in Yosemite Available Year-Round?

Yosemite is open year-round, and most cabins in Yosemite continue to take bookings during the winter season. However, certain roads into the park close during snow-prone months, and it's important to check road conditions before your trip. Things to Do in Mammoth in Summer

Wild Willy’s Hot Springs

Only 20 minutes south of Mammoth Lakes you’ll find two inviting hot springs at the end of a 0.2-mile wooden boardwalk, perfect for a morning soak before starting the day or for relaxing your muscles after a long day of hiking in the Eastern Sierra. By arriving early in the morning you'll better your chances of having the hot springs to yourself or sharing with only a couple of other visitors.

Wild Willy’s features two main pools ranging from 95 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The hot springs are child friendly, but we recommend only using the larger, cooler pool for particularly young ones. We had a dive watch and the smaller, heart-shaped pool registered at 104 degrees while we were in it. Also, be sure to remain quiet and respectful when visiting the hot springs as it’s a very relaxing and serene place. Don’t forget to leave the springs in the same condition that you find them and always pack out any trash brought in with you.

Alabama Hills

A stunning range of hills and rock formations located at the base of the Eastern Sierra, Alabama Hills is the perfect stop along Highway 395. If heading from Southern California to Mammoth, turn left onto Whitney Portal Rd off Highway 395 in Lone Pine. Keep driving straight until you reach the turn-off for Alabama Hills. 

With Mount Whitney looming in the distance, Alabama Hills is famous for auto touring, cycling, hiking, rock climbing, trail running, horseback riding, fishing, and camping. Featuring both stunning sunrises and sunsets, this Instagram famous destination is perfect for landscape photographers.

Devil’s Postpile National Monument

Established as a National Monument in 1911, Devil’s Postpile was formed less than 100,000 years ago when a cooling lava flow cracked into multiple side columns. The easiest way to find this natural phenomenon is to hop on the mandatory shuttle bus operated by Eastern Sierra Transit Authority in the summer months, followed by a 0.75-mile hike to the monument. 

During the summer months when Reds Meadow Road opens, the shuttle starts at Mammoth Ski Resort and makes several stops before arriving at the final destination. In winter months, Devil’s Postpile is only accessible by cross-country skiing or snowshoeing over Mammoth Pass into the valley and makes for an epic adventure.

June Lake Loop

Located about 20 minutes from Mammoth Lakes, you’ll find a 16-mile-long road featuring four beautiful lakes and snow-peaked mountains looming in the distance. Made up of June Lake, Fern Lake, Gull Lake, and Silver Lake, all are known for world-class trout fishing. The surrounding area near the town of June Lake also offers hiking, swimming, boating, skiing, craft breweries, local restaurants, camping, and more. There’s so much to do in this little place, you could easily add on to your Mammoth stay and make a full-on trip out of June Lake no matter the season!

Mammoth Lakes Fishing

While June Lake may be known for its world-class fishing, Mammoth Lakes is too. Bring your own gear or rent some from a local shop and set up camp near a lake for the afternoon. We stopped by Ernie’s Tackle and Ski Shop to rent gear during our stay since we weren’t planning on fishing and didn’t bring our own. The owner was incredibly kind and can answer any questions you may have.

There are also plenty of other lakes between June Lake and Mammoth, so hop around and try a few!

Mammoth Lakes Kayaking and Boating

With so many lakes to choose from in the Mammoth area, we highly recommend renting a kayak or even a boat for an afternoon on the lake. Most of the major lakes in the area offer rentals, but be sure to check conditions before heading out. It can get windy, which makes it difficult to get back to shore on many of the larger water bodies.

Summer Skiing in Mammoth

Ever wanted to ski in the summer? That’s totally possible in Mammoth! Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort normally offers skiing well into July and the season almost made it into August this year, only closing on July 28th. 

The stomping grounds of many Olympic skiers and snowboarders, a visit to Mammoth Mountain is a must if you’re a winter sports junky. Be sure to buy your tickets on Mammoth Mountain’s website for major discounts compared to the walk-up price!

Mono Lake

Formed 760,000 years ago, the lack of outlets in Mono Lake has caused salt to build up creating Tufa Towers made out of limestone. Although the lake is packed full of salt, it's still home to a vibrant ecosystem mainly made up of brine shrimp and migrating birds.

Unlike the Salton Sea, Mono Lake is much cleaner and doesn't harness a putrid smell. Located about 30 minutes from Mammoth and 15 minutes from June Lake, we highly recommend a stop here! If making a trip to June Lake, be sure to head a little further north along the 395.

Yosemite National Park

Located just a little over 2 hours away from Mammoth Lakes along Tioga Road/Highway 120, you’ll find one of the best national parks in California: Yosemite! Whether planning an easy day trip from Mammoth or spending a few days camping in the valley, Yosemite’s close proximity practically demands a visit. Be sure to check road conditions on Highway 120 as the road usually doesn’t open until late May or early June and closes once it starts receiving snow. Due to its location and length, the road IS NOT plowed in the winter.

Best Mammoth Lakes Hikes

Rainbow Falls Trail - Easy

One of the more easily accessed trails, Rainbow Falls is perfect for every kind of hiker from beginner to experienced and it has a beautiful payoff at the end. Named after the colorful rainbow the mist creates, this trail is either a 2.5-mile round trip hike from the parking lot or a 5-mile hike from Devil’s Post Pile Monument.

Crystal Lake Trail - Moderate

This 3.1-mile out and back trail to Crystal Lake includes granite rock features, with fir trees, pines, hemlocks, and manzanita at the end of the trek. Take a stroll around the lake or lounge on the shore with a picnic lunch; this hike is a must-do on the eastern side of Mammoth. Although it features panoramic views of Mammoth Lakes on the way down, the trail is a steady incline most of the way up and is not for the faint of heart.

Thousand Island Lake Hike - Hard

A 17.4-mile out and back trail along the PCT departing from High Trail trailhead in Agnew Meadows, the Thousand Island Lake hike is best suited to more experienced hikers and backpackers. This trail will bring you to breathtaking peaks, vast meadows covered in lupine, and the stunning Thousand Island Lake. This difficult, but rewarding trek features a 2,900-foot elevation gain and is almost exclusively uphill for most of the trail.

Hitting the road bright and early, we had our sights set on one of the best day trips from Las Vegas: Valley of Fire State Park. This underrated destination in Nevada is packed full of hikes and trails and provides the ideal escape from the partying of Las Vegas or a great stop on a broader American Southwest National Parks Road Trip. Plus, it’s the perfect alternative to The Wave in Arizona if you didn’t manage to score a permit.

As we neared the toll booth, a ranger greeted us with “someone about 60 cars in front of you paid your $10 fee, would you like to keep it going?” The chain had yet to be broken, so we continued the good deed for the next car and went on our merry way. Not an uncommon occurrence in the great outdoors, the camaraderie and respect for fellow adventurers is what keeps us coming back.

The toll booth was out of maps, but the visitor center still had a few in stock. This presented little inconvenience as we love to make the visitor center one of the first stops at any national or state park. It’s an opportunity to gather history on the park, check trail and weather conditions, as well as stock up on needed supplies.

Things to Do in Valley of Fire

Beehives

We zig zagged our way through the park and soon our attention was immediately drawn to the fire red rocks lining the road.These alien-like sandstone rock formations, resembling the shape of a beehive, were created by wind erosion. Over hundreds of years, sand carried throughout the desert forming sand dunes, eroded rocks, such as these, along the way.

We highly recommend making a stop at this destination either for a quick lunch break at the picnic area or by hiking through the winding path. It’s the perfect introduction to the Valley of Fire as it quickly reveals the reason behind the park’s name.

Elephant Rock Trail

After driving through the stunning Beehives, further down the road, we approached a sign indicating Elephant Rock was coming up on our right. A rock in the shape of an elephant definitely caught our attention and before we knew it, we were hitting the 1.2 mile loop trail.

This trail is mostly sand, so we recommend coming prepared with the proper shoes, meaning, please don’t wear sandals. The sand was difficult to navigate and quite tiring, but we found the view at the end to be worth the struggle.

Mouse's Tank Road

Rocks jet out from the ground, piled high, and lining the long, winding road. It’s as if one stepped out onto Mars without having to make the 9 month trip.The photo of all photos in Valley of Fire, I had missed this Instagram famous spot on my last trip to Valley of Fire, but was determined to photograph it the second time around. The reason I missed it? I drove the wrong way and it was behind me the entire time.

For the perfect photo and safest route, leave your car at the Elephant Rock trailhead and walk down the road to the giant rock pile on your right. Rangers in this park are quite strict about parking on the side of the road, so always be mindful of only parking in designated lots.

Fire Wave Trail

While planning our trip here, the Fire Wave, Valley of Fire trail found its place at the top of the list — weather permitting of course. Once Mouse Tank and Elephant Rock were crossed off, we had our sights set on witnessing the natural fire wave rocks. As we made our way down the 1.5 mile out and back trail, giant, vibrant red sandstone structures towered over us on our left. The trail began to split, but all ended at the same destination, some involving a bit more sand than others.

As we approached the final, uphill stretch, swirls of beige and red appeared in the 150 million year old sandstone and hills of nearly every color rose in the distance. A sight straight out of sci-fi film, Fire Wave is a must do trail for all visiting the park. Pack a lunch and take in the multi-color destination found at the end of the trail, but be sure to check the weather before heading out to the Valley of Fire Wave. Temperatures often find themselves over 100°F and hiking the trail is not recommended in these sorts of conditions. Head to the visitor center prior to hitting the trail for the latest updates on conditions.

White Domes Trail

Once Fire Wave was complete, we were on a hiking high and knew we needed to find another trail. White Domes Trail 1.1 mile loop seemed the perfect option as it features a variety of sights including slot canyons, sweeping vistas, historical western sets, and more.

Entering the parking lot, we feared finding a spot might present a challenge, but boy were we lucky — we found a spot on the first loop around the lot! Although this lot may appear packed, hang tight as many hikers are constantly coming in and out of the trail. Trust us, you will find one!

The location for the 1966 movie The Professionals, this trail features a leftover set from the western film, starring Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale and is one of the first sights we approached along the way. Little did we know, the slot canyon ahead would prove to be even more brilliant. As we rounded the corner, both sides of the red canyon walls shot high up, inviting us in. We wandered in awe as the cool air provided relief from the hot desert. Hues of purple, pink, and turquoise popped from the hills in the distance as we exited the canyon and caves along the trail reminded us of scenes straight out of Star Wars.

Rainbow Vista

Heading back to the front of the park was our goal for the remainder of the day, but we knew we needed to make a stop and take in the stunning vista we passed on the way to White Domes.

We parked at a trail head near the beginning of the vista and walked a bit for a closer look. Hues of purple, pink, brown, and beige dance across the landscape as the black asphalt winds through the hills providing a practically perfect contrast. A sight straight out of stock photo, be sure to save a moment in your day for this spot.

Valley of Fire Cabins

We still weren’t ready to head out of the park, but were a bit tired from the many trails we trekked, so a bit of history seemed ideal. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, these three cabins provided refuge for travelers visiting the park. Still standing today, we wouldn’t mind spending the night in one if offered! Taking up just a few minutes of your day, we recommend making a quick little stop to witness a piece of the park’s history.

Seven Sisters

A group of seven tall, eroded rocks, this spot provides the perfect picnic area, as well as an escape from the desert heat. We didn’t hop out of the car here, but rather did a slow drive by for a glance of these beautiful sandstone structures.

Valley of Fire’s smaller size makes this park easy to accomplish in just one day. Nevada’s first ever state park is a must do when looking for a way out of Vegas for a bit!
